Getting My Karnataka Medical Council Registration as an Other-State Doctor

A first-hand guide to the Karnataka Medical Council registration process for doctors from other states, including timelines, fees, and document checklist.

·

I’m a vitreoretina specialist, originally registered with the other state Medical Council, and I recently completed my Karnataka Medical Council (KMC) registration.

When I started looking for information online, I realised there’s very little clear, first-hand guidance for doctors from other states who want to register in Karnataka, especially for PG doctors. Most of what’s available is either outdated, vague, or fragmented.

So I decided to write this post to help anyone who might be navigating this process.

It’s a completely offline process

KMC registration for doctors from other states is entirely offline. You need to physically visit the KMC office in Bengaluru.

There’s no need for a prior appointment or token booking for out-of-state doctors, but timing still matters.

I reached the office around 10:00 am. Although it officially opens at 10:30 am, reaching early is important because only 15 applications are accepted per day.

You can download the In Lieu form from the Karnataka Medical Council website .

The process at KMC: smoother than expected

The staff was helpful and cooperative, and the workflow was structured. Around 10:30 am, an official starts distributing the In Lieu forms, checks documents briefly, and assigns a token number.

Showing your pre-filled form, they will give you a token number.

NOC is the most important part

Your parent council must have already sent a confirmatory email to KMC regarding your NOC at the time you applied for it.

If this hasn’t been done, KMC will contact your original council for verification of your NOC, and you’ll need to wait for their response.

How long does the process take?

The entire process usually takes around 3–4 hours. The timeline depends largely on how quickly your original state medical council responds.

Process flow

  1. NOC approval
  2. Documents verification / compilation by an official (carry original and one photocopy of each document)
  3. Document verification by Registrar
  4. Biometric
  5. After biometric, they will guide you to create your User ID & Password on the KMC website
  6. Create your profile & upload documents under “Add documents”
  7. Similarly add documents for additional degree and smart card
  8. Payment for each is done separately (as of December 2025)
  9. Wait for final print of registration certificate and smart card
